Oddball is a weekly dogfight event at Mystery Valley Golf Club run by, and played
in, many of the same people that coordinate the monthly MVGA tournaments. Oddball games are held on Saturdays starting around 9:00am. Each Oddball game consists of 1 round of play.
What to expect at an Oddball game
Once at Mystery Valley, head into the pro shop to pay for your round. Once you have paid, you can visit
the Oddball coordinator at the tables adjacent to the concession area. Here is where you'll pay your
buy-in and learn the points you need to shoot for the day.
The Oddball game is $15.00 (cash) to play. You are given a point value to aim for which is based on
handicap. Point values are based on the scoring below. For the sake of pace of play, we pick up after
double bogey.
Birdies: 4 points
Pars: 2 points
Bogeys: 1 point
Assuming you are shooting at 20 points, you'll likely need to hit the 20 point mark and then some.
Players who shoot at 20 and wind up with 25, for example, would be considered +5 on the day. These
players are usually "in the money", however each game is different with no guarantees of points to
payouts.
Another way to win is for skins. If you birdie a hole that nobody else birdies, you will win a skin for
that hole. If two people birdie the same hole, that hole is cancelled out. Skin amounts vary based on
number of participants and number of birdies.
Finally, fun. Fun is always had by everyone that participates. Sometimes there are side games based on
the foursome you're in; sometimes there are MVGA President's Cup matches going on during Oddball games. Most
people hang out in the clubhouse afterwards to talk about the round and the day.
